Minion Cake and Cupcakes Step-by-Step (day-by-day)

First of all, major props if you get the reference in my title :). I made the cake and cupcakes for my boss' baby shower. She loved them!

First start out by getting all the stuff you need together.

Then you're going to want to bake your cake. What I did was use 2 cake mixes in 1 pan, that way it was super thick! You'll need to bake it longer.

While it's baking you can make your board for the cake to go on. Or you can just buy one of these things. To make a cake board, take a piece of cardboard (slightly bigger than your cake, that will fit in your cake box), wrap it in foil, smooth it over the back, tape it on the back, and voila, you're done!
Next, you'll want to invert you cake onto a cooling rack, then invert onto your cake board. MAKE SURE YOUR CAKE IS COOL ENOUGH TO INVERT! Mine broke while inverting, so it was slightly dented when it was done.

When it is completely cool, cut off the top "hump" to make it level all the way across.

Then, you'll want to "dirty ice" the cake. This is also called a "crumb coat". This is a thin layer of icing that, basically, seals the cake so no crumbs get in the layers of frosting after this. After you have it crumb-coated, stick it in the fridge for about 30 minutes to set.

This is the point where you'll want to mix your frosting colors. When you're dying frosting, you'll want to use gel dyes, that way the frosting does not get thin when you're trying to ice! I used "lemon" by Wilton for the yellow. For the blue, I bought blue dye, but I did not use it. I had left-over blue frosting from 4th of July, so I just used that!

Next, divided your cake into the yellow half and the blue half by making a black line with your Wilton black decorator frosting.

Then, carefully ice your yellow side and put in fridge to set (10 minutes).

Following that, you'll want to make your eye(s). Put a dollop of white frosting in the center/top of the head and smooth with either a knife or spoon. When your eye is smooth, put a round piece of chocolate in the middle. You can use an up-side-down kiss or a chocolate wafer or something of the similar.
Then use that hand dandy black frosting to put on all the goggle details.
Then, using a knife, draw in a smile. Then cover it with the black frosting.

After that, take your blue frosting and carefully ice the bottom half and place 2 chocolate pieces where the buttons on the overalls will be.

Alright, here's where you'll add the finishing details like hair and the G on the bottom!

Now that the cake is done, you'll want to make your minion cupcakes! I use a white box mix for this. Bake and cool 24 cupcakes and put them in a cake box.
Then, take your supplies out. You'll want to unwrap 12 Twinkies. I also found those awesome Wilton candy eyeballs to use, so I didn't have to make them myself! Oh and more decorating frosting.

I found cutting the Twinkies from the back with with serrated knife, works really well!

Then, line up your Twinkies to get ready to decorate them!

Start by adding the eyes. I did some 2-eyed and some 1-eyed. Use the black frosting to add the eyes. Only do 1 Minion at a time, otherwise the frosting will harden before you get your eye(s) on!

Next, add your detail with the black. Outlining the goggles and adding straps, mouths, and hair.
Then, frost your cupcakes with blue frosting, a little a few at a time and carefully add your Minions to the top!
Then carefully deliver them to your party!! Have fun and enjoy :)
